Hyundai has been known as the i20 SUV so far. This will be sharing the same platform with Hyundai’s current compact vehicles. Being a monocoque, the drive will be a front drive and will not be available in India. At the same time, Hyundai’s design will be similar to the design we have seen in Europe.
Hyundai is working on a range of new engines. The 1.0-liter direct injection turbo gasoline will make one of the Hyundai Kona. Then there will be up to 1.4-liter gasoline and 1.4-liter diesel mills that will be available on Hyundai-Kona. The 2018 Hyundai Kona will be with a six-speed manual and possibly even an SUV or automatic transmission as well. Diesel must also get two pedal layout. Hyundai is working on a new range of SUVs in India and this compact will be the smallest offer.
A direct competition to 2018 Hyundai Kona will be Maruti Vitara Priza and Ford Ecosport. The next SUV will include the Tata Nixon. We reckon this compact SUV will be somewhere between the Ener 8 and the Kees to Enkh 12 Khas (on the road price). This should be the ideal pricing for a SUV.
Hyundai can consider imposing a premium, but even then needs to create a gap between 2018 Hyundai Kona and Creta. Kona will sit under Tucson’s domestic Korean line-up manufacturers, going toe to toe with rivals such as the Mazda SC-3, Honda HER-V and Toyota C-HR. It is the first time Hyundai will have a player in the smallest cross-section in Australia. Although the company offers Creta in China and i20 active in Europe and Asia-Pacific markets selection.
